Most gardens are managed primarily as spaces for people, which is entirely reasonable. What the features in this guide do is add structure and shelter that wildlife can use without changing how the garden looks or functions. A log pile in a corner, a bundle of bee tubes on a fence post, a 13 cm gap at the bottom of a fence panel: none of these are disruptive, and together they can make a garden genuinely useful to a wide range of species that have few other places to go.

If you are helping someone set up their garden for wildlife, habitat features are a good starting point. A bee home, a log pile, and a hedgehog gap can all be installed in a single visit with minimal tools. They work in small gardens and large ones equally, and most require no maintenance once in place.

Solitary bee homes

Around 240 of Britain’s 270 bee species are solitary bees, meaning they do not live in colonies and each female builds and provisions her own nest independently. Unlike bumblebees and honeybees, they have no colony to defend and are extremely unlikely to sting. The most common garden visitors are the red mason bee (Osmia bicornis), which appears from March and nests in hollow tubes, and the patchwork leaf-cutter bee (Megachile centuncularis), which is active through summer and lines her cells with neat circles cut from garden leaves.

Both species will readily use a well-made bee home. The key word is well-made: a significant proportion of the ‘bug hotels’ sold commercially are poorly designed and of little or no value to bees. Understanding the difference is important before buying or building one.

What works

A functional bee home consists of hollow tubes of the correct dimensions, fixed facing south or south-east, at a height of 1–1.5 m. The specifications matter:

What does not work

Many commercial ‘bug hotels’ include compartments stuffed with pine cones, straw, bark, or hollow logs. These sections attract very little wildlife of value and can harbour slugs and mice. Bees use only the hollow tubes; the rest is decoration.

Very large structures housing dozens or hundreds of tubes in a single block also carry risks. Research from the Wildlife Gardening Forum suggests that high densities of nests in one location can increase the spread of parasites and diseases between neighbouring larvae. Several smaller bee homes spread around the garden are preferable to a single large one. Replace the tubes every one to two years to prevent parasite accumulation.

Plastic, glass, or metal tubes trap moisture and cause the mould that kills larvae. Paper or cardboard tubes are easily parasitised. Stick to bamboo, reed, or untreated wood.

Log piles

A stack of logs in a shaded corner is one of the most productive wildlife habitats you can create. It costs nothing if you have any fallen branches or prunings, takes minutes to arrange, and within a year or two supports a functioning community of invertebrates, fungi, amphibians, and small mammals.

The species using a log pile depend on how it is built. A pile with logs in direct contact with the soil in partial shade retains moisture and is ideal for stag beetles, woodlice, centipedes, ground beetles, slow worms, frogs, and toads. Logs raised on bricks or stones in a sunnier spot stay drier and provide different habitat, used more by solitary bees and spiders. A garden with both types gets the most from the feature.

Stag beetles

The stag beetle (Lucanus cervus) is Britain’s largest insect and one of its most threatened. It is a priority species for conservation and legally protected from sale under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Its decline is driven almost entirely by the loss of dead wood: larvae live underground in rotting timber for three to seven years before emerging as adults, and when gardens and parks are tidied of fallen wood, the beetle has nowhere to complete its life cycle.

A log pile can directly address this. For stag beetles, the important details are:

Hedgehog highways

Hedgehogs roam 1–2 km each night in search of food, mates, and nesting sites. They cannot climb fences or walls, which means a garden enclosed on all sides is effectively a dead end for any hedgehog that enters it. A single 13 cm gap at the base of a fence panel costs nothing and can be cut in minutes with a jigsaw or handsaw.

Specifications

The gap should be 13 cm wide and 13 cm tall, roughly the size of a CD case. This is large enough for any hedgehog to pass through comfortably but too small for most domestic pets. Cut the hole to ground level with no lip or step: hedgehogs push through snout-first and a raised lip can injure them or stop a young animal entirely. Sand the cut edges smooth for the same reason.

The gap is most valuable when it connects to an adjacent garden rather than opening onto a road or hard surface. Talk to neighbours: Hedgehog Street, the national campaign run jointly by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society and the People’s Trust for Endangered Species, estimates that connecting five gardens in a row can double local hedgehog survival rates by opening up enough territory for healthy foraging and breeding.

Hedgehog numbers in Britain have fallen from an estimated 30 million in the 1950s to fewer than 900,000 today. Joined-up gardens are one of the most practical things communities can do to halt that decline at a local level.

Bird boxes

Natural nest sites, such as holes in old trees and gaps in stone walls, have become scarce in most urban and suburban gardens as old trees are felled and buildings are renovated. Bird boxes directly replace them. A box in the right position, facing the right way, can be occupied within the first nesting season after it goes up.

The most important variable is the entrance hole size, which determines which species can use the box. Most commercially available boxes fit one of two categories:

Positioning

Mount hole boxes 2–4 m up on a tree, wall, or post. Face them between north and east: this avoids prolonged direct sun, which can overheat eggs and chicks, and keeps the prevailing wet southwesterly wind out of the entrance. A slight downward tilt of the box helps rain run off the roof and away from the hole.

Blue tits and great tits are territorial during nesting and will not tolerate another pair of the same species nearby. Space boxes for the same species at least 15 m apart. House sparrows are more sociable and a cluster of boxes close together suits them well.

Maintenance

Clean boxes every year in October or November, once all birds have finished nesting. Remove the old nest material entirely: it harbours fleas, mites, and blowfly larvae that will infest the following year’s chicks if left in place. Scald the inside of the box with boiling water and allow it to dry before replacing the lid. Do not use insecticide or flea powder inside the box; these are harmful to birds.

Do not open the box or check on its contents between April and August. Disturbing a nest during the breeding season can cause adults to abandon eggs or chicks.
