Why water matters
Freshwater is one of the most critical and most threatened habitats in Britain. Over the past century, around half of all farm ponds have been drained or infilled, and 80% of the ponds that remain are in poor or very poor condition, choked by nutrients, shaded out, or simply neglected. The knock-on effect on wildlife has been severe: great crested newts (Triturus cristatus), once described as fairly common, are now a protected species whose numbers have fallen significantly over the past 50 years, and dragonfly and damselfly populations have declined sharply across the same period.
Garden ponds now play a genuine conservation role. Research shows that small bodies of water collectively support around two thirds of all wetland plants and animals found in the UK. A single well-planted garden pond can provide breeding habitat for frogs, toads, and newts; hunting ground for bats above the water’s surface; a water source for hedgehogs, foxes, and birds; and habitat for more than 100 invertebrate species. Nothing else you can add to a garden comes close to that return.

Start small: the barrel pond
No garden is too small for water. A half-barrel, a large ceramic pot, or any watertight container at least 40 cm deep will attract wildlife within weeks of being set up. Barrel ponds are ideal as a first step: they require no digging, cost as little as £20 to £40 in materials, and can be placed on a paved terrace, a balcony, or anywhere that gets a few hours of sunlight each day.
- Choose the container – a half-barrel or large glazed pot works well. If using a wooden barrel that previously held alcohol, seal the inside with aquatic pond sealant first; residual compounds will otherwise leach into the water and harm wildlife.
- Position thoughtfully – part shade is ideal. Full sun all day will cause algae blooms and overheat the water; full shade limits plant growth. A spot that gets morning sun and afternoon shade suits most planted containers well.
- Fill with rainwater – use a water butt wherever possible. Tap water contains chlorine and elevated nutrient levels that encourage algae and unbalance the ecosystem. Top up with rainwater throughout the season.
- Add a wildlife exit immediately – before filling, place a ramp inside: a stack of stones, a length of untreated wood leaning at an angle, or a piece of chicken wire folded into a slope. Any creature that falls in must be able to climb out. See the hedgehog safety section below.
- Plant it up – add at least one oxygenating plant and one marginal. See the planting section below for which species to choose.
If you are helping someone add a water feature to their garden, a barrel pond is the right place to start. It can be set up in an afternoon, needs no digging, and will attract wildlife within a few weeks. It works equally well on a paved yard, a narrow terrace, or anywhere there is no space for an in-ground pond.
Going bigger: an in-ground pond
An in-ground pond dramatically increases the range of wildlife it can support and is the most valuable single habitat addition you can make to a garden. Size matters less than depth and design: a small, well-designed pond of 1 m² will support more wildlife than a large, steep-sided ornamental pond with no marginal planting.
Depth
Aim for a minimum depth of 38 cm (15 in) anywhere in the pond, with a deeper central zone of at least 60 cm. Shallow ponds overheat in summer, reducing oxygen and causing algae problems, and freeze solid in winter, killing overwintering creatures. The deeper zone provides refugia for frogs, diving beetles, and dragonfly larvae through both extremes.
Sloping sides
At least one side of the pond must have a long, gentle slope that wildlife can use to enter and exit. A gradient of roughly 1 in 3 (one unit down for every three across) is the practical minimum. Steep or vertical sides are dangerous: hedgehogs, frogs, and beetles that fall in cannot escape them. The shallow end also creates a damp marginal zone at the water’s edge, which is one of the richest microhabitats in the whole pond.
Lining
Butyl rubber liner is the most reliable choice for a wildlife pond. It is flexible, puncture-resistant, and lasts 30–50 years. Lay a layer of pond underlay or old carpet beneath it to protect against sharp stones. Once the liner is in place, cover the base and shallow zones with a layer of washed gravel or sand; bare liner discourages plant establishment and can trap small creatures.
Water source
Fill the pond with rainwater if at all possible. A water butt connected to a downpipe can fill a surprisingly large pond over a wet week. If tap water must be used to supplement, let it stand for 24 hours before adding it to an established pond, and top up little and often rather than all at once to avoid disrupting water chemistry.
What to plant
Plants are what make a pond function. They oxygenate the water, control algae, provide cover for invertebrates and breeding amphibians, and offer nectar and structure for insects above the surface. Choose native species wherever possible: they support considerably more invertebrate life than ornamental non-natives, and many of the most attractive plants for wildlife are British natives.
A healthy pond needs plants from at least three of the four zones below. For a barrel pond, aim for one oxygenator and one marginal as a minimum.
Oxygenating plants (fully submerged)
Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum) is the single best oxygenating plant for UK wildlife ponds. It floats freely in the water column, needs no soil and no basket, and stays green year-round without dying back in winter. Drop bunches into the pond from April onwards. It is native, non-invasive, and works in containers and in-ground ponds equally well.
Marginal plants (0–15 cm depth)
Marginals grow in the shallow water at the pond’s edge. They are as important as oxygenators for biodiversity: their foliage shelters aquatic larvae, their stems provide climbing posts for emerging dragonflies, and their flowers bring in pollinators.
- Marsh marigold (Caltha palustris) – bold yellow flowers from March to May, one of the earliest nectar sources of the year. Thrives in shallow water and boggy margins.
- Water forget-me-not (Myosotis scorpioides) – flowers May to September, providing nectar across a long season. Newts use the leaves to wrap their eggs individually; this is one of the most important egg-laying plants in a garden pond.
- Yellow flag iris (Iris pseudacorus) – tall structural plant with bold yellow flowers in May and June. Best suited to larger in-ground ponds as it spreads vigorously; keep it in a basket if space is limited.
Floating surface plants
Frogbit (Hydrocharis morsus-ranae) is the best native choice for surface cover. Its round leaves resemble a miniature water lily, and tadpoles, dragonfly larvae, and small invertebrates shelter beneath them. It overwinters as small buds that sink to the bottom, rising again in spring. Aim for surface plants to cover no more than a third of the pond’s area to maintain open water.
Hedgehog safety
Every water feature, from a half-barrel to a full pond, needs at least one reliable exit that any animal falling in can use to climb out. Hedgehogs can swim, but they tire quickly and drown through exhaustion when they cannot find a way out. Vertical or steeply curved sides are particularly dangerous: preformed plastic ponds are especially risky because their edges are smooth and give no grip to claws.
Build the exit before you fill the water, not as an afterthought. For a barrel or container, a short ramp of chicken wire folded into a slope, a stack of flat stones arranged in steps, or a piece of untreated wood leaned at an angle will all work. For an in-ground pond, the sloped “beach” end serves as the exit, but you can reinforce it with a length of chicken wire pegged over the slope to give claws better purchase on the liner.
One exit is not always enough. An exhausted hedgehog circling a pond in the dark may not find a single ramp in time. For in-ground ponds, provide a gently sloping exit on at least two sides.
Bird baths
A bird bath does not replace a pond, but it fills a different niche: it provides drinking and bathing water for birds even in gardens where there is no room for any other water feature, and it attracts species that may not visit a pond. It is also the easiest water feature to maintain and the quickest to show results, with birds often finding it within a day or two of being placed outside.
The key specifications, per RHS guidance: no deeper than 5 cm (2 in) at the centre, with gently sloping sides so birds can wade in rather than plunge. Ceramic or stone baths retain heat better than plastic, which matters on cold mornings when birds most need to drink. Position the bath within a few metres of shrubs or trees so birds can flee to cover quickly if they sense a predator, but not directly under a tree where leaf litter and droppings will foul the water.
- Change the water daily – do not simply top it up. Fresh water every day significantly reduces the risk of spreading avian disease between garden birds.
- Clean the bath weekly – scrub with a stiff brush and rinse. No chemicals or soap are needed; thorough scrubbing with plain water is sufficient.
- Keep it ice-free in winter – pour warm (not boiling) water over the surface to melt ice. Never add glycerol, antifreeze, or salt, which are toxic to birds. Winter is when fresh water is hardest to find and the bath becomes most valuable.
Maintenance through the year
Spring and summer
Once a pond is established it needs very little intervention. Top up with rainwater during dry spells; do not let the level drop more than a few centimetres. If blanket weed develops, remove it by hand or with a stick, shaking it at the pond edge for a few minutes so any trapped invertebrates can return to the water before you discard it. Avoid chemical algae treatments in a wildlife pond.
Autumn
Falling leaves are the main maintenance task in autumn. Decomposing leaves consume oxygen and release ammonia, both of which harm overwintering wildlife. Net the pond in early autumn to catch leaves before they sink, but raise the net on sticks or supports so it sits above the water rather than resting on the surface. A net lying flat on the water can trap visiting hedgehogs. Remove accumulated leaves from the net every few days.
Winter
Do not be alarmed by a frozen surface: frogs, diving beetles, water boatmen, and dragonfly larvae overwinter in the deeper water and are well adapted to cold. What harms them is a pond frozen completely solid for extended periods, as gases from organic matter build up beneath the ice and cannot escape.
If the pond freezes over, place a pan of hot water on the surface to melt a small hole for gas exchange. Never break the ice with a hammer or heavy object: the shock waves travel through the water and can kill overwintering creatures. Do not disturb the bottom sediment in winter, as this is where many animals are dormant.
