Soil is not simply a medium to stick plants into. A teaspoon of healthy garden soil contains more individual organisms than there are people on Earth: bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, mites, springtails, beetle larvae, and earthworms, all interacting in a layered food web that processes organic matter, cycles nutrients, and creates the crumb structure that lets roots breathe. Digging disrupts all of this, every time it happens. No-dig growing is the practice of leaving that system intact and feeding it from the surface instead.

What happens when you dig

The most immediate effect of digging is physical: fungal threads (hyphae) running through the soil are severed. Many of these belong to mycorrhizal fungi, which form symbiotic partnerships with plant roots and extend their effective reach by up to ten times, gathering phosphorus, water, and other nutrients the roots cannot reach alone. Once cut, these networks take weeks to re-establish, leaving newly planted crops without their most efficient nutrient pathway at the moment they need it most.

The second effect is the weed problem. A square metre of undisturbed soil typically contains thousands of dormant weed seeds at depth, in a bank that has built up over decades. They remain dormant because they lack the light needed to trigger germination. Digging brings them to the surface where they sprout in the same conditions you are trying to grow crops in. Regular hoeing removes the seedlings but not the bank, so the problem repeats every time the soil is turned. On a no-dig bed, the surface layer of compost brings very few viable weed seeds of its own, and those from the underlying bank stay dark and dormant.

A third effect is compaction. Repeated tillage creates a layer of compressed soil directly below the cultivation depth, known as a plough pan or tillage hardpan, which resists root penetration and impedes drainage. Earthworms, undisturbed over time, do more to break up compacted soil than any fork: their tunnels are permanent, their excretions bind soil particles into stable aggregates, and their populations on no-dig beds are consistently higher than on dug beds in long-term trials.

Starting a no-dig bed

A new no-dig bed can be created directly over grass, weeds, or compacted ground without removing any of it first. The method relies on cardboard to block light from existing vegetation and a thick layer of compost on top to provide an immediate growing medium. The process takes a few hours for a small bed and requires no digging tools at any stage.

If you are helping a beneficiary set up a new growing area, no-dig is usually the right approach. There is no heavy lifting, no need to remove existing turf, and the bed can be planted the same day it is built. It is also well suited to gardens where the grower has limited mobility, since future maintenance involves only a light compost layer spread from a wheelbarrow, with no repeated physical effort.

Step by step

What compost to use

The quality of the compost matters more than the quantity. Well-rotted homemade compost from a bin or heap running for at least six months is ideal: it is largely weed-free, has a fine, crumbly texture, and adds the widest range of nutrients and microbial diversity to the bed. If there is not enough homemade compost available, council green-waste compost (sold in bags from garden centres or in bulk from local authorities) is a practical alternative. It has a consistent fine texture that works well as a top-dressing.

Fully-rotted farmyard manure, especially from horses or cattle fed on straw rather than grass silage, is also effective. It must be at least six months old and preferably well over a year. Fresh manure generates excess heat, introduces weed seeds from animal feed, and risks burning plant roots. If using bought-in compost, choose peat-free products; peat extraction destroys irreplaceable bog habitat and the RHS has discontinued all use of peat across its operations from January 2026.

Woodchip is sometimes used in no-dig gardens, but it should be reserved for paths between beds rather than the growing surface itself. On beds, it ties up nitrogen as it decomposes and can make direct sowing difficult.

What to grow

Almost every vegetable, herb, and annual flower grows well in no-dig beds. In the first year on a new bed, transplants tend to establish more easily than direct-sown seeds, since the compost layer can be uneven and the cardboard beneath creates a slightly different moisture environment than bare soil. From the second year onwards, direct sowing is straightforward in a well-maintained bed.

Deep-rooted crops such as parsnips, carrots, and beetroot can be sown directly into a 15 cm compost layer without issue: by the time roots reach the cardboard, it will have begun to break down and roots will pass through it or around it easily. Brassicas, courgettes, squash, tomatoes, and beans all transplant well. Potatoes can be grown on the surface under a mulch of compost or straw rather than earthed up in the conventional way; this is sometimes called ‘chitting and placing’.

Annual maintenance

Once established, a no-dig bed needs only one regular intervention: an annual top-dressing of compost. Apply 3–5 cm of well-rotted compost over the entire surface in autumn after the last crops are cleared, or in late winter before the new season begins. Do not dig or fork it in: leave it on the surface and let earthworms and other soil organisms incorporate it in their own time. This is the whole point of the method. Digging the compost in each year would undo the soil structure benefits and restart the mycorrhizal recovery cycle from scratch.

The top-dressing also acts as a light mulch that suppresses the small number of weeds that do germinate at the surface. Weeding on a no-dig bed is notably easier than on a dug bed: the loose compost layer means roots come out cleanly with minimal effort, and because the underlying seed bank is never brought to the surface, the volume of weeds decreases each year rather than staying constant.

Common mistakes

The most frequent cause of a new bed failing is gaps in the cardboard layer. Weeds that emerge through joints in the first season can spread rapidly; relaying that section with an extra patch of cardboard and compost as soon as you spot it is the easiest fix. Overlapping by a generous 15 cm around every edge and corner when setting up avoids the problem entirely.

The second common mistake is using partially composted or fresh organic material in the initial growing layer. Straw, wood chip, and fresh manure are not substitutes for well-rotted compost at the setup stage: they take months to break down, tie up nitrogen in the process, and can harbour weed seeds. Save these materials for the paths between beds or the compost heap.

A third mistake, especially on established beds, is reverting to digging when a crop fails or the bed looks tired. The instinct to turn the soil over and ‘freshen it up’ is understandable but counterproductive: a fresh top-dressing of compost achieves the same result without the setback to soil structure. If a bed has become compacted for any reason, a single light fork-through is less damaging than a full dig, but it should be treated as a one-off correction rather than an annual routine.
